Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back to the start of another school year. We look forward to providing the best possible education we can for your student.
We want to take a few minutes to inform you of a few changes for the upcoming school year, based on last year’s surveys of parents, students and staff regarding the WHS school climate. A committee was formed to analyze the results of those surveys.
From these surveys, and some research regarding school discipline, a new initiative called “Hurricane Pride” is being developed. The committee members have placed signs, as reminders, throughout the building describing how students should act in certain situations. Being respectful, responsible, and safe are the central themes. To some these messages will seem like common sense, rules that take us back to a more elementary time, however our data has shown that we need to take a step back to basics. We, as a committee, have decided that reinforcement of these common sense ideas might be helpful to many students who are struggling with the fundamentals.
Initially, students will find two major changes that will affect them during the school day. Tardiness to class and the use of cell phones and other electronics will be more strictly enforced. The student handbook clearly states policies on how these issues should be dealt with. A stricter following of these rules will be enforced in the coming year.
A new policy concerning tardiness to class is being adopted. The policy is called “Clean Sweep” and will begin after Labor Day. The NO CELL PHONE during the school day policy will also be strictly enforced.
As a staff, we feel that if your child is moving quickly to the next class, that some of the problems related to loitering etc. will be reduced. Also, removing the distractions of cell phones and other electronics should help improve classroom success.
Please discuss these and other school wide behavior issues at home. With your help, we feel your child can have both a successful and rewarding school year. Please feel free to contact us with any concerns.
Thank you,
WHS PBS Committee
